There’s something inherently ‘meta’ about selecting Simon de Pury for this instalment of ESSENCE Lifestyle’s Curator’s Club – a series of video interviews in which inspirational figures cogitate the whys and wherefores of their respective creative milieus. After all, in his capacity as chairman and co-founder of art auction house Phillips de Pury & Company, the Basel-born auctioneer and collector has himself curated some of the most dazzling exhibitions the world has seen, as well as providing advisory services to individuals, museums and other institutions over a career spanning almost 50 years.

Like many of the figures profiled by ESSENCE Lifestyle, de Pury is something of a polymath – not just an art dealer, but a TV star, a globe-trotting cultural buccaneer, an auctioneer with a style so exuberant, he’s been nicknamed "the Mick Jagger of art auctions”, and, perhaps incongruously, a hip-hop aficionado (he moonlights as a DJ).

Here, the former chairman of Sotheby’s Europe – a man who sees his role as a professional aesthete as a beautiful and unshakeable addiction - discusses art’s place in the fickle world of cyberspace, his love of the music of Prince and his future ambitions with his wife Michaela: plans that are certain to cement his place at the summit of the global arts community.
